Homelessness doesn’t discriminate, it can happen to anyone from bankers to bakers and CEO’s to caretakers. And what I think a lot of people forget, as I do, is that homeless women go through their period each month while living on the streets.

Menstruation is not a choice. All women should have access to sanitary items but unfortunately the government don’t currently see these as essential items. I for one suffer terrible periods and I have the luxury of not only essential items but also chocolate, a hot water bottle and medication. Could you imagine not having access to the most basic sanitary items?

A new petition is asking the Government to give homeless shelters an allowance to buy sanitary products for women living on the streets.

So help homeless women have dignity during that time of the month and show your support by signing the online petition, or donate a tampon to thehomelessperiod.com.

This Easter I donated a bag of sanitary items to the Women’s Resources Centre in Cambridge to hand out to women in need. It didn’t take much time, cost less than dinner at Nandos and will hopefully help quite a few women. I didn’t do this to feel good about myself, I done it because it is the right thing to do.

Spare £10 and donate a bag of sanitary products to your nearest women’s charity or homeless shelter.

    • Its a great idea to be rolled out nationally. I think local churches could possibly be interested too. I’ve just had a look at your website, what you do is amazing!
